What is "Free your River"?

The project and the website

This project will help you – teachers and students in Europe – to learn more about rivers and their importance to life. The students should be aged 10 to 12 years (lower level) or 15 to 17+ (higher level).

Rivers have always been very important to people but nonetheless are often misused.

Many regions have recently been affected by floods. We must therefore start to think about the future relationship between river restoration and human development. Municipalities must assume responsibility for rivers that flow through their territory. Politicians advocate river-related legislation, either to weaken or improve river protection. Often it is up to local powers to enforce these laws.

"Free Your River" wants to stimulate you to get active: Discover your river with the help of the checklist, use the action kit to rise public attention, and use the web methods to cooperate with other student groups in Europe! Use the Books of the Rivers as a vital tool for promoting your river project, searching the projects of other groups, and as a workspace for cooperation with other groups. Search inside the background information we provide to you. Be inspired by the news from other project groups on the Notice Board.

"Free your river" will be in the testing phase until summer 2007. Schools who want to join the tests are welcome! After autumn 2007, the website will be ready and open to all schools, that want to use it.
