Contact with the Local Authorities

Would you like to contact your local authorities and make request something from them?

For Example: Write a letter to the mayor and send a copy to all municipal councillors. The local administrative office or the internet should provide you with the addresses. The following sample letter may help you.

It is often difficult to arrange a meeting with the mayor. It is therefore important to point out the importance of the issue courteously but determinedly.

It will be helpful to thoroughly prepare for the meeting. Briefly and concisely note down your requests and arguments and present them to the mayor/the councillors. You may also want to define who will take part in the discussion (max. 3 persons), who will be the speaker and who will take notes. You may prepare for the audience by role-playing the discussion in advance in order to achieve a poised appearance.

The speaker has the following duties: introducing the speakers and their topics and then briefly explaining and stating the reasons for your request. Note down the mayor’s/councillors’ answers and be persistent if they do not respond clearly or extensively enough. This is the only way to subsequently evaluate the discussion within the team and to take further steps: e.g. convincing prominent people to lobby for your demands, writing a news article about the outcome of the audience or discussing further points with individual municipal councillors, list with further ideas.
