With millions of views on TikTok, digital cameras are making a remarkable resurgence in a time when we thought smartphone cameras were everything and more.

While smartphone cameras have truly changed how we capture moments, people are embracing digital cameras again as they venture into content creation and rediscover the joy of experimenting with their creativity.

We spoke to Anthony Jackson, Training Specialist at Henry’s Camera to better understand this collective shift towards a more hands-on photography experience.

How has the digital camera industry evolved?

As the creator economy continues to grow, we’re starting to see shifts in devices to keep up with the demands. Initially, photography was the main focus of digital cameras but we’re starting to see a shift towards video as more people are vlogging and filming video content for social media.

“What are the exciting updates to this release? They are all video-related specs,” said Jackson. “With the introduction of higher resolutions such as 6K or 8K, not many people know that you can pull a still image from an 8K video and that’s about 35 megapixels.”

Being able to pull a still image from a high-resolution video is a huge plus for capturing those special moments. In the past few years, YouTube, TikTok and Instagram have fuelled the demand for cheaper digital cameras compared to more expensive film photography.

With some cameras getting more hype than others like the Canon G7X MK II and III is one of the few TikTok viral cameras, Jackson notes the real difference now than advertising in magazines back in the day is that more younger people are coming to buy cameras faster.

“The way we take pictures is going to change and our core brands such as Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm and Sony were all focusing on resolution for a long period of time in order to pave the way forward and change photography forever,” he said.

Who is the driving force behind the resurgence of digital cameras?

The demand for digital cameras never died, said Jackson.

iPhone cameras were and still are having their moment. But, millennials and Gen Z are driving this trend toward digital cameras again. It goes back to affordability and desire to shoot higher quality content added Jackson.

“We still have the traditional older woman or man coming in interested in printing photos they took on vacation with their families and wanting to see what Nikon is putting out today, but Gen Z is killing it in capturing an audience and monetizing it.”

For those creating content on YouTube, TikTok and Instagram, it comes down to the look of the footage. People want high-quality, professional-looking footage.

“What’s the highest quality I can get with the least amount of friction? That’s a question people ask themselves. Sony and Canon are making it easier to get good-looking videos and photos due to things like Menu Assist feature in the new Canon Rebels.”
