BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Comcast-Xfinity broke ground in Bryan-College Station. They hope to help the community and rural areas stay connected with a fiber-optic network and give locals another choice for their utility bills.

“It’s so exciting to be here in Bryan College Station today, we’re celebrating a big milestone. The groundbreaking for our fiber-optic project to bring services throughout the community,” explained Nicolas Jimenez, General Market Manager for Bryan-College Station. “We’re going to be able to deliver multi-gigabit symmetrical speeds, the fastest internet around, and a whole bunch of amazing services like mobile phone, video, home security for homes and businesses.”

Comcast-Xfinity internet has joined the internet broadband system, and they’re expected to bring in around 1,000 lines of fiber-optics, expanding access to a wider variety of homes all around the area.

County Commissioner Bentley Nettles says the project is another step forward in expanding broadband access into rural areas.

“I live out in the county, so I get my internet over an antenna. I’m really excited about the prospect of getting fiber optic out to my community so that when my kids are downloading a movie, I can still and my wife can still do something on the computer,” shared Nettles.

The company has been working with leaders to make connections with community engagement, small business support, philanthropy, and volunteering efforts.

“I’m looking forward to a more than just what I call the transactional aspects of a good business model, which I think is what Comcast represents, but a community relationship that they have demonstrated that they provide across their current service areas,” added John Nichols, mayor of College Station.

Comcast officials said the fiber-optic project will connect around 70,000 homes and businesses to high-speed internet, but it’s more than just about the wifi.

“We want to be a partner in economic development and supporting educational opportunities, and making sure that the transformative power of the internet is available for everybody,” furthered Jimenez.

The company brings a new mix to the market and a new option on community utility bills.

“Our community tells us all the time what they need and what they want is more opportunities to experience things that aren’t currently available. Whether it’s a storefront retail, or whether it’s fiber-optics services, or some brick and mortar kind of building-certainly entertainment. So, I see this as expanding the choices that individuals have,” said Nichols.
